St.Mungo's Academy   the old school before its closure, taken June 1973
.

.

St.Mungo's Academy, Parson Street, Townhead, Glasgow
In 1973 the school was earmarked for demolition. A replacement, also called St Mungo's, opened on Crownpoint Road in Bridgeton in 1977.

Photograph sent in July 2004 by Glesga Pal Joe ............ St. Mungo's an all boys selective secondary school, with over 500 pupils. St Mungo's Academy had other school buildings in Duke St, Kennedy St and Barony St. it was founded and ran by the charitable Marist brothers order.  A certain brother Walfrid was responsible for the formation of Glasgow Celtic FC, for the purpose of the feeding and welfare of the impoverished masses in Glasgow's east end. The Duke St. building was next door to the infamous Great Eastern Hotel, a well known Glasgow doss-house. The Molendinar burn openly ran round the back of the school, and the whiff was unforgettable!!
