Raf was purchased in 1974 from a Dutchman
who gave us a short history of the schooner. She was finished being
built under the command of German officers during the occupation of
Belgium. After the war a French Chevalier bought her and later was
berthed at Cannes in the Mediterranean.
The Trust owned her until 2004 and several hundreds of Glasgow
youngsters sailed her on the Clyde. All the work was carried out
voluntarily to save costs and enable the youngsters aged from twelve
years of age, to turn up at Helensburgh pier with only their spending
money - most of which bought 'pressies' for the family.
A huckleberry Finn existence prevailed as Raf became 'their' boat and on
returning time and again provided the adventures that every young person
should be aware of and try to take part in for a fuller outdoor life.
The book is a collection of many of the humourous incidents aboard as
youngsters from 'Glesga' turned into 'Clyde pirates'
