There is nothing surer to evoke Glescafolk than .....are ye a Billy or a Dan.
Witness extracts from my Message board..........

....Big Peter Ferguson now there was a great big guy I spoke to him about 12 years ago when he turned up at the Parkhead Gala Day in Helenvale Park When he was younger he played in some Orange Band and used to always stop at the corner of Arrol Place and bang his big drum as a favour to my old granda who was a member of the No Surrender Flute Band when he was younger.......... Big Peter ended up opening up the old Black Cat cinema in Springfield Road as a furniture shop. Sadly he committed suicide several years ago...he had been diagnosed with cancer and rather than let his family see and feel his suffering he took his own life. He never ever forgot his roots I will say that about him and he was a perfect gentleman to the very end.

..........does this sectarian who celebrates the big drum being bashed to keep his granda happy realise the offence to others he was indulging in, as a protestant I  object to being tarred with the same brush as these people who think that to be a Brigtonian was to be a bigot wrapped in the orange sash, no way !!!! We are better than those who want to march from Landressy St. to the Orange Halls along the Dalmarnock Rd. wherever it was they crawled out of to keep their claptrap to themselves!!!!!

.........First of all Mr.Morrow I am no Bigot.I was only stating fact in regards to part of my childhood and what was memories in regards the person that I knew as a child. It does not matter where you go in this world..if you say you come from Bridgeton people will automatically mark you down as a Protestant. Likewise if you say that you come from Parkhead they'll mark you down as a Catholic.   However if you are a student of social history you will know that this is a popular misconception. Bridgeton had the biggest Catholic parish in Glasgow and the children of Sacred Heart used to march regularly around the Toll...even in the days when the Billy Boys were in their heyday...without any hassle. In Parkhead we have one of the oldest Orange Lodges in Scotland and there is a fund called the Watson Fund that is paid out annually to people who were born and bred in Parkhead...only Protestants can apply. In regards to my grandfather he grew up in times when it was fashionable to be part of something whether it be the local ILP branch or the Temperance society..he chose the NOEY. And if you want to make remarks about bigots I would suggest you go and find out the true meaning of the word before you start lambasting people....because by your posting it sounds to me as if you are one... in regards to people who are members of the Orange Order..which incidentally I am not a member. If you wish to revel in nostalgia then you must accept that there are things in people's memories that are not all about dreeping aff dykes and lucky middens. Bridgeton will be Bridgeton.  .

....as a socialst and a keen student of working class history, I certainly know the true meaning of bigotry, irrespective of which side of the divide practices it,but I must say I was unaware that joining a ludge or being in the knights was merely being a follower of fashion, maybe we should let the Scottish Executive know so we can save all that police time and money being wasted on arresting people for being "dedicated" followers of fashion, I have never revelled in nostalgia but I have dreeped aff a few dykes and raided a few middens in my time out of necessity, and thats down to those Bigots who would keep the working man in his place and by using any means necessary, and what better and easier way than to divide and conquer with the use of religion to keep us occupied while the fat cats get off with the cream, so Charlie come down off your high horse and at least recognise  for all the good charitable works these organisations undoubtly do, at the end of the day it is charity...when it could be so much more!!

...I have no intention of turning this excellent website into a debating society on the east end of Glasgow's religious past. However , you got your history wrong when you mentioned 'ludges' and people marching from Landressy Street to wherever. It was a Masonic Lodge in Landressy Street not an Orange one.
Does anyone remember the day it got blown up....two would be Loyalists decided to heat their pies up in the oven...not
realising that one of their fellow Loyalists had hid the gelignite in the drawer at the bottom of the cooker. The result was the Masonic halls was blown to kingdom come and also the wee sweetie shop below it which made the best Candy Balls in the city of Glasgow.
