Streets of Bridgeton

It gives me great pleasure to report on some good news....old buildings not destroyed but renovated...have look at this magnificent old building at our Glasgow Green just recently renovated and made into flats.
47 Greenhead Street.....Latterly this building was the  'St.Aidens School for older Handicapped Boys'	This is the former Greenview School a splendid building which was originally the mansion of the cotton baron, Dugald McPhail, and dates from 1846. It was bought by the City of Glasgow in 1959 and the philanthropist James Buchanan left £30,000 for its conversion into a school, established as the Buchanan institute " a school for the maintenance and instruction of destitute children."   ( oor Jimmy probably wouldn't be happy its no longer a school, but I'm sure he would be delighted at the transformation of the building ) The year after the education act of 1872, which made education compulsory, the delightful 'Young Scholar in studious pose', was carved in sandstone by William Brodie and placed on top of the building.  ( see photographs )

The next time you are in Bridgeton, take a walk over the Green and have a look at this splendid conversion into flatted dwellings.
