       217th Glasgow Boys' Brigade ... founded 1924

  Charlie Black-'Mr.217':-  26 Nov.27-15 Oct.2019
Charlie Black passed away peacefully last night, he battled fiercely but at the end was completely accepting of it. To his family and friends he was the most gentle, loving and kind hearted man.
His wife Betty, family, Flemington-Hallside Church and his beloved Boys Brigade were the centre of his long, happy and eventful life.

Flemington-Hallside Church

A tribute to a great servant of the
Boys' Brigade, the Church
the community and to the youth of
Halfway, Cambuslang.

Flemington-Hallside Church
2nd October 2016 at 11:00am held a service to award Queens badges to two of our boys (Fraser Kennedy and Andrew McKenna) and also Plannning to have a lunch to celebrate the unique contribution of Charlie Black to the life of the 217th Gilbertfield.

Charlie Black a legend in the Boys' Brigade and an example to us all ...... 'Sure & Stedfast'

Charlie was born in Halfway, Cambuslang on 26th Nov.1927 and attended Gateside School, he learned the trade of a joiner and laterly spent the last 20 years of his working life as a chrome plater in the Hoover.
Flemington-Hallside Church
The church has played a major part in his life. He was christened on 1st Jan.1928, joined the Boys' Brigade in 1936, was married to Betty in 1953, became an elder on the 26th Apr.1962, and Captain of his beloved company in session 1963/64.  Charlie was a mason and a member of local Cambuslang
Lodge, Lodge Buchanan No.1499

I said to Charlie the Boys' Brigade had obviously been a big part of his life, his reply was :-

"Oh aye, it has BEEN my life!"
When he joined the 217th Boys Brigade Company as an eight year old in 1936 little did he know then he would still be an active member all these years later!  Yes, in 2016 Charlie celebrates 80 years as a member, from recruit, Private, Lance-Corporal, Corporal, Sergeant, Staff-sergeant, Warrant Officer, Lieutenant, Captain & Hon-Captain!

He still has his original pillbox hat.  Charlie Black fondly known as "Mr.217"

Charlie has shared some newspaper cuttings, programmes and photos with me which I am delighted to show ......

He loved the annual summer camps and fondly remembers St.Andrew's, Bangor, Port Rush, Jersey to name but a few!
Some summer camp photos below: If anyone can add info, let me know.

Charlie learned to play the drums in the company and in his time the Bugle Band won the Glasgow and Scottish championships.
He went on to teach boys the drums and still does ...............

Lieutenant Charlie Black's session card for 1955-56.
You will see the Boys' Brigade were way ahead of their time...... See rule 2. Smoking amongst boys of the Brigade is strongly discouraged!
